It's pretty difficult to tell what Israel's ultimate goals are.

Jolani's government is tough to trust.

And this is going in multiple ways.  I wouldn't be surprised if there were major elements of Jolani's government that Jolani doesn't want in government, and he could be feigning anger at Israel in some cases in order to hide his desire to take out some of the worst factions of his own coalition.

Turkey is a major guiding hand behind Jolani's government, and I'm not sure how much this is a proxy low grade war between Israel and Turkey.  Israel just recognized the Armenian genocide, signaling a massive shift from not wanting to piss off either Turkey or Azerbaijan.

Or this could be Israel creating a buffer zone because they've been at war with Syria since 1948 and they can flex their muscles a bit because Russia isn't involved anymore.

I have no idea.

Israel intends to keep Syria unstable forever.  It has no interest in an entity that could ever challenge Israel's dominance or attempt to recover lost territory.  While the government is weak, Israel will help keep it alive.  If it strengthens, Israel will weaken it.  Israel will also intervene to the extent possible to prevent rapprochement between the government and other powers, particularly Western ones.

Im confident saying it has to do with the Druze situation. Recently when Syrian Druze communities came under attack by Syrian Gov't aligned forces, Israeli Druze in the Golan crossed the border to retaliate/protect their brethren. Israel supported their own Druze with airstrikes and incursions. This makes sense, as it will align Druze sentiment more firmly with Israel, and by result strengthen the Golan border more firmly in favor of Israel.

Israel is the biggest factor destabilising the middle east today. They have attacked so many nations around them all for bullshit reasons. Had any other nation done that pager attacks, they would have been touted as the biggest terrorists on the planet.

Going to sticky a clarification, since scrolling through the comments it is evident that there is a lot of confusion about this. While famously insular, the Druze community is not led by a singular leader or group of leaders. The Israeli Druze are led by one guy, and there's something like a two or three way split among the Syrian Druze. When you read something like _'Syrian Druze leader calls on Israel to halt attacks'_, or _'Syrian Druze leader requests Israeli military support'_, keep in mind that the leader(s) in question do not speak for the Syrian Druze as a whole; the community is politically divided at present.

The largest Syrian Druze faction is led by Sheikh Hamoud al-Hanawi, who adopted a conciliatory posture toward the Assad regime during the civil war, opposing violence aimed at overthrowing or seceding from the Assad government largely for fear of persecution by Islamists if the rebels won. Since said rebels won, al-Hanawi has adopted a similarly conciliatory posture toward the new al-Sharaa regime, probably hoping for a similar arrangement of _"Don't cause us trouble, we won't trouble you"_ as he had with Assad. **This group has cautiously supported al-Sharaa, and opposed Israeli intervention**

Closely aligned with the al-Hanawi faction--to the point that the two men are often discussed as joint leaders of a single faction--is Sheikh Youssef Jarbou's _'Unitarian_' faction. They desire to be largely autonomous from Damascus, with Jarbou even demanding total withdrawal of the Syrian military from Suwayda shortly before the ceasefire was announced, but they do not call for outright independence and are opposed to violence against the Sharaa government. **This group is generally opposed to al-Sharaa, as well as Israeli intervention.**

A breakaway faction led by Sheikh Hikmat al-Hijri is more radical. This faction coalesced in early 2025 from a mixture of anti-Assad militias that sought to achieve something like a Syrian confederation, along with previously Assad-aligned militias which had taken up law enforcement in Suwayda province as the Ba'athist military fell apart. Over the past few months this faction has greatly expanded in size and escalated violent attacks on government loyalists, owing to fears of anti-Druze violence perpetrated by government-aligned Islamic fundamentalist militias. Since May 12th, it is also involved in cyclical violence with Bedouin tribes, with each group attacking the other as retaliation for previous acts of violence. This faction very briefly hoped for cooperation with al-Sharaa and the negotiation of an autonomous Druze state within Syria, but now favors outright secession. **This group wants an independent state, and supports an Israeli intervention to achieve this.**

Any corrections would be more than welcome; it is very difficult to find good information on Syrian Druze politics as a non-Arabic speaker and it is quite possible that my summary is not entirely accurate.

syrian here, people are doing some next-level sanewashing with this strike on the more centrist side of reddit, i'm as saddened as anyone that sectarian violence is flaring back up, and i'm not playing apologist for any side here, but a military HQ, in the middle of the most important square in the capital city, that's not a strategic defense decision, this is a tailor-made choice to anger as many people as possible. to raise tensions over the breaking point while syrians are already stressed as is

let's just think about this rationally for a minute, not even a week ago there were uncontrolled fires needing international aid and SDF clashes in the north, now the south is uncontrolled chaos, the government was already showing itself to be incapable of forcing all the factions to stay in line, what's a direct shelling of it's central headquarters supposed to do when the entire problem is the government being too weak to enforce it's authority? if you believe that i'm wrong, and it's actually the military directly allowing the massacres to happen for sectarian reasons, why not force its hand through the peace deal that was taking place a few days ago? despite the land grab, already bad civilian mood with the gaza situation, and complete control of the airspace, the transitional government seemed all but begging for a peace deal. the US was backing it, and yet here we are, Netanyahu knows that he can just bomb the central square and have the international community behind him under any justification, that's worth remembering.

This is what I can gather:  
- Israeli intervention is making the situation substantially worse.  
- Netanyahu is deliberately stoking instability in other countries to cause conflicts with Israel for the sake of delaying his criminal trial.  
- The Syrian government apparently decided to send in one of the units that was previously involved in the Latakia massacres to suppress unrest in the south. Entirely predictable events occurred.  
- The unrest was basically tit-for-tat killings between warlords before it erupted into full-blown war a few days ago. Captagon was also apparently involved.

In other words, literally no side here is acting in good faith. Please send in the blue helmets already.

Yes they are. “Blood oath”. The Druze are probably the most loyal minority in Israel to the state and serve in the army at higher rates than even the Jewish population. 

The former IDF chief who has in the post until a few months ago actually criticized the Government for not doing enough yesterday, as well as **Israeli Druze** leaders themselves saying the Druze had been abandoned.

Druze in Israel are attempting, and sometimes succeeding crossing into Syria to help their brothers  and have stated that if the Israeli government doesn't step in they will, they have also threatened the bond between the Druze and Israel.

It's very odd how every comment seems to just be skipping over the crucial bit, of Syrian Government forces killing members of the Druze community. Just a lot of pushing this as Israel just bombing for no reason. 

Situation is escalated on the border with the Israeli Druze community wanting a lot more action from Israel forces to protect Syrian Druze. One hopes its some bad militant factions in the army not obeying command, however compete silence from Al-Sharaa is concerning given violence committed by State forces on both Druze and Alawites communities.
